We’ve collected millions of data points from hundreds of thousands of Americans, and continue to draw from and create the cutting edge in public opinion research.
About the Role:
As an Applied Behavioral Research Scientist, you will consider Avalanche’s product from a behavioral perspective, curating, creating, and applying the science that makes our work more impactful, more efficient, and more rigorous. Our data is largely in the form of unstructured text, so while you don’t need to be an NLP expert, an ability and love for working with qualitative data is critical. We have done a lot with questions of values, emotions, and identity, but draw very broadly from high-quality research.
The major pieces of our process include developing survey questions that elicit the information we need; reliably and thoroughly extracting the meaningful signal from that data; and finally, finding the patterns within that signal that allow us to make recommendations for resonant messaging. These are all things we do, now -- you will help us do them better.
You have a proven track record of taking complex human systems, and finding the insights and structure that bring order out of the chaos. Your background likely draws from fields like social psychology, linguistics, decision making, computational science, and/or communications. You are comfortable exploring the literature and striking out on your own, and know which to do when. You prioritize understanding user and product needs and excel in an interdisciplinary environment working with experts in other fields. You thrive in a fast-paced, client-driven, and constantly changing work environment; and are genuinely excited about the social, cultural, and political dimensions of our work.
Deeply understand the nature of Avalanche’s problems, and the tools, systems, and theories, we use to solve them.
Collaborate with the technical, strategic, and messaging expertise on the team, and prioritize the problems that are the most important for our ability to deliver messaging recommendations that are deep, rigorous, fast, and above all, helpful.
Undertake these analyses on your own when appropriate, or with assistance and support from other members of the team when appropriate.
Guide or even lead the development of tools necessary to solve your research questions
Focus on findings with high returns to the company, for speed, effort, and impact
Help establish the long-term scientific trajectory of the company
Qualifications & Qualities:
Successful candidates will have all of the following:
3+ years experience in the application of behavioral science to real-world problems, whether in a laboratory or the field
Experience as the lead in designing, executing, and analyzing studies -- in other words, the ability to perform high-quality research entirely on your own, when necessary
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group (executives, managers, and subject matter experts)
Some experience working outside of research, and understanding the demands and timelines of a client-facing business
This position is based in either Vancouver B.C. or Washington, D.C., but we can both assist with relocation, and sponsor permanent residency in Canada, for applicants currently based elsewhere.
