Avalanche Strategy conducts cutting-edge public opinion research that leverages advances in cognitive science and AI to yield deep insights into values, emotions, and attitudes. We support resonant messaging for candidates, companies, and causes that share our mission to create a more just, equitable, and sustainable future. We are backed by Higher Ground Labs and work with the leading progressive organizations in the US and Canada.

About the Role:

As a Data Scientist, you will support and expand our core technologies by working on models, data curation, and intelligent tools for messaging researchers.

About You:

You are an excellent data scientist and a proficient software engineer.

As a data scientist, you are a problem solver more than a technician and think just as deeply about the nature of a prediction as you do about the tools you’ll use for it. You would rather decently predict something meaningful than perfectly predict something that’s not, and will put in the time to tell the difference.

As an engineer, you can contribute to projects such as complex databases and user interfaces, collaborating with other engineers to build systems that are secure, reliable, and don’t reinvent the wheel.

As our colleague, you understand that clear communication, trust, and morale affect performance more than anything else.

Responsibilities & Tech Stack:

Design, run, interpret, and communicate, data science analyses for both internal and external products. Much of our product is related to analyzing text corpora, so experience with NLP is especially relevant, but we approach many problems from many angles.

The majority of our codebase is currently in R and Python, but we are open to new tech stacks as appropriate. Strong preference for proven technologies, ex: caret, pytorch, Postgres.

Experience, familiarity, or at least enthusiasm for behavioural science is very relevant since most of the problems you will be working on are fundamentally behavioural problems.

Qualifications & Qualities:

  • 3+ years experience working on prediction or analytics problems.

  • 1+ years experience developing software in a team environment.

  • An enthusiasm for progressive politics, and the mission of the company.

  • Prefer DC or Vancouver but can be flexible for the right candidate.

We are committed to building a workplace that reflects the diversity of communities we serve. We especially encourage women, people of colour, and others who are underrepresented in the tech industry to apply.

To express interest or refer a candidate, please send a brief note and either resume or LinkedIn profile to We’re looking to close the position as soon as possible so please apply sooner rather than later.
